The James Webb Space Telescope has unveiled a captivating celestial phenomenon known as the Treasure Chest, a cometary globule nestled within the Carina Nebula. This extraordinary structure, resembling a wooden chest with its lid open, houses a cluster of young stars, each surrounded by circumstellar discs. The most massive star within this cluster is an O-type star, approximately 19 times the mass of the Sun, and is estimated to be around 1.3 million years old. The stars' brilliance illuminates the surrounding dust clouds, creating an otherworldly glow. The Treasure Chest's unique shape is influenced by the intense radiation from nearby stars, including Eta Carinae, a star system with a star 100 times the mass of the Sun, and Trumpler 16, a cluster containing several extremely hot massive stars. The Webb telescope's observing program, dedicated to studying young stars' interactions with their surroundings, has provided valuable insights into the formation and evolution of star clusters within nebulae.
