With a population of just 140, this historic mining town has become a certified dark sky community, offering a unique and immersive experience to those seeking a deeper connection with the night sky.
Naseby's journey to becoming a dark sky community began with a visit from an American astronomer and conservationist, John Barentine. His encouragement sparked a 10-year process of community engagement and education, resulting in the town's official recognition for its dedication to preserving the night sky.
One of the key drivers behind Naseby's certification was the Central Otago district council's update to the lighting plan. By reducing the brightness of street lighting, the town created an ideal environment for stargazing. This initiative not only benefited the local community but also attracted dedicated astronomers and stargazers from around the world.
The process of becoming a dark sky community involved more than just changing street lights. It required a collective effort from the residents, who had to ensure their private outdoor lighting was compliant. Fortunately, most residents already met the standards, and the community development group, Naseby Vision, was able to educate and engage with those who needed additional support.
As part of the certification process, Naseby Vision also invested in telescopes and night binoculars, offering educational sessions at the local tennis courts. It was a humbling and awe-inspiring journey through the history of the universe, made even more special by the knowledge that I was seeing the same sky as our ancestors.
As I drove back to my accommodation, with the heater blasting to warm my frozen toes, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the work of people like John Barentine, Jill Wolff, and Paul Bishop. Their dedication to preserving the night sky and educating others about its importance has created a unique and valuable experience in Naseby.
